About Us

The Red Spring Racing Story

Red Spring Racing was founded in 2025 by Jon Hochberg, who has served as the Thoroughbred Managing Partner for New York-based Funky Munky Stable. It is that experience as managing partner, coupled with years of ownership experience with multiple partnerships that led to the vision of Red Spring Racing. The name originates from the adoration of Saratoga and the long standing tradition of drinking a cup of unfiltered natural spring water from Big Red Spring on the hallowed grounds of Saratoga Race Course as the first order of business and meeting point for friends and family on each and every visit to the track. What started as a day trip among neighborhood families from the Hudson Valley in 1988, has turned into a long standing tradition of returning to Saratoga each and every summer since to gather with family and friends to enjoy all that the historic track and magnificent town have to offer.

Red Spring Racing is not just a partnership, it’s a tradition come to life to compete on one of the most lucrative racing circuits in the United States. Our goal is to offer a modern and transparent approach to thoroughbred ownership. We believe the best ownership experiences are built on trust, communication, and respect for the sport. Our focus is on thoughtful horse selection, experienced trainers and bloodstock agents, and creating an ownership environment where members feel informed and included, regardless of race outcome.

Jon Hochberg

Managing Partner

Founder & Owner of Red Spring Racing

Born and raised in the Hudson Valley, Jon Hochberg was never far from Saratoga Springs growing up. He first visited Saratoga Race Course in August of 1988 and instantly fell in love with the charm of the town and atmosphere at the track. Then came the Easy Goer-Sunday Silence battles of the 1989 Triple Crown races, which made him a fan for life. From watching Thoroughbred Action with Harvey Pack, to making numerous trips to Saratoga each and every summer, Jon has remained a Saratoga regular ever since ’88. A former college basketball coach turned athletics administrator, he has been involved in the industry as an owner and a managing partner going back to 2017 and is never far from Belmont Park now residing on Long Island.

Born and raised near Finger Lakes Racetrack, David grew up across the street from a Thoroughbred farm where his family boarded horses. He worked at Finger Lakes as a teenager on weekends and during the summers. He was introduced to racing by his father who had owned racehorses since 1968.

Donk worked for the late Hall of Fame trainer Woody Stephens in Florida during the winter of 1984-85 and continued his apprenticeship with Stephens until 1990. As a Stephens’ assistant, Donk was part of Stephens’ final two Belmont Stakes victories and worked with 1987 Two-Year Old Male Champion Eclipse Award Winner, Forty Niner, as well as Danzig Connection, Stephan’s Odyssey, and numerous other stakes winners.

He also trained Awad, winner of the 1993 Secretariat Stakes (G1) and the 1995 Arlington Million (G1), and had career earnings of $3,270,131. Since then, David has won many New York and G1 stakes races and is considered one of New York’s most respected and well-liked trainers.

Besides Awad, Donk has conditioned such graded stakes winners such as Ordway (G1), Pennine Ridge (G2), Pays to Dream (G2), Added Gold (G2), Hessonite (G3), King Kreesa (G3), Fishy Advice (G3), Strike the Bell (G3), and Sharp Performance (G3).
