Frequently Asked Questions

Red Spring Racing organizes small ownership groups that participate directly in the ownership and management of thoroughbred racehorses. Each horse is owned by a dedicated group (LLC), allowing members to share in expenses and the full racing experience without owning a horse on their own.

You will have direct ownership in a thoroughbred racehorse. You will have access to training updates, race day credentials, barn visits, and more. We make horse racing ownership and all the perks that come with it, accessible, affordable and fun. We not only provide transparency, we also educate our partners about how things operate and why. We allow you the ability to enjoy ownership without the operational burden. We are a community built around the sport, not hype. Plus, every new owner receives a mystery welcome package for joining us!

Each horse (partnership) is owned through a dedicated LLC. The LLC owns the horse and has its own bank account. We do not commingle funds between partnerships. Partners own a defined percentage interest and all expenses are shared pro-rata. Partners share in racing expenses and purses as outlined in the operating agreement.

If you own 5% or more of a thoroughbred, you need to be licensed in New York State. The perks of being a licensed owner include the ability to watch morning workouts, access to the backstretch, access to the barn, access to the paddock, as well as free clubhouse admission, and free parking in the owner’s parking lot.

Thoroughbred ownership is a behind the scenes sports experience unlike any other. This includes exclusive backstretch access, race day paddock passes, free clubhouse admission, free owners parking, and winners circle access for the official track win photo when your horse finishes first. Owning part of a racehorse is like owning part of a sports team. Network with fellow owners while sharing in the excitement of your thoroughbred racehorse. This is not a fan club, this is true ownership.

We understand that consistent communication is important. We provide detailed updates and information via email as needed regarding your horse, as well as the rationale behind decisions being made. This includes training updates, workout information, entry information, race previews, past performances, and race recaps.

Red Spring Racing competes almost exclusively on the New York racing circuit (Aqueduct, Belmont Park, Saratoga). Should circumstances call for it, we would ship our horses to tracks in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky or Florida as necessary.

Our trainers know that access and engagement is a big part of why our partners choose to become owners. We encourage our partners to visit the barn on the backside and are welcome to visit their horse and to ask questions as long as it is done is a manner that is mindful and respectful of the barn operations going on.

We do purchase mortality insurance for yearling and two-year old in training purchases. Generally, we do not insure claiming horses, but if a claiming horse were to become an allowance level horse, we would then purchase mortality insurance for that horse. We do purchase race horse owners liability insurance for each of our horses in order to protect our partners.

Expenses for training and other costs are billed quarterly and are sent in a detailed invoice to each partner based on the percentage of the horse that they own. Invoices provide a comprehensive breakdown of all expenses incurred that quarter. Invoices are also accompanied by a detailed profit and loss report so partners can see the status of the partnership account.

Since the summer of 2018, purses on the NYRA circuit have been distributed as follows:  55% of the total purse to the winner, 20% to second place, 12% to third place, 6% to fourth place, 4% to fifth place, with the remaining 3% divided among the remaining runners.

Trainers generally receive 10% of the owners share for a top three finish. Additionally, the groom and exercise rider generally each receive 1% of the owners share when the horse wins a race. Jockeys receive 10% of the owners share if they win the race, 5% of the owners share for second or third place, or a flat fee of $125 for finishing off the board.

Red Spring Racing management is compensated through three different channels. The first is through a quarterly administration fee (which comes to less than a dollar a day for 5% owned), the second is through a 6% commission on all purse earnings, and the third is through a 5% commission in the event that a horse is sold or claimed for a profit. Note that management does NOT retain shares of the horse as a form of compensation. Management purchases shares and pays their share of the expenses like all other partners.

No. Each partner should understand that their participation should be centered around their desire to share in the thrill of thoroughbred ownership. Through partnership, horse racing becomes accessible, fun, and affordable. We highly recommend that partners do not partner on our horses solely for hopes of financial gain. It has been our experience that partners receive the greatest satisfaction when their primary motivation is to enjoy the excitement of horse racing and the access afforded to the sport by being an owner. This is about participation, access, and the excitement of thoroughbred racing. There are no promises or guarantees of any types of returns.

Partnerships are formed at different times throughout the year. For instance, a two-year old in training partnership would be formed in February/March, a yearling partnership would be formed in August/September, while a claiming partnership could be formed any time between February and September. We could even form a partnership for a private group at any time based on the request of the group, thus allowing the group the ability to enjoy ownership without the operational burden.

Two to three times per year we will activate a flash store, giving our existing partners a limited time to purchase Red Spring Racing hats and apparel through a third party vendor.

We are building a scalable New York-based horse racing ownership group which will include multiple horses over time, repeat ownership opportunities, priority consideration and access for existing partners, and a networking community of New York racing enthusiasts.

This website is for informational purposes only and does not constitute an offer to sell securities. Horse racing is a highly speculative sport and involves substantial risk. Ownership should be viewed as an experience, not a financial investment. No profits or returns are guaranteed or promised.
